Blox – Free Open-Source 2D Game Engine

Blox Game Engine (BGE) is an extremely easy to use and powerful 2D game engine for Windows. It allows anyone with basic C++ knowledge to develop commercial quality 2D games in very little time. You can develop anything from a puzzle game to a multilayered platformer, without ever having to deal with “Windows messages” or low-level Direct3D code.

Because BGE is open-source, anyone with basic C++ knowledge can make changes to their own copy of the engine (assuming you have the proper prequisites and follow the license agreement).
